A few weeks ago, a charity called City Harvest reached out to Toby Hogsbjerg, Farm Manager at The Wicken Estate, to ask if it might be possible for the farm to help the charity.
City Harvest takes food donations from farms and the food industry to provide meals and food staples to over 130,000 people across London... EVERY WEEK! The charity delivers to every kind of community group in London, including food banks, faith groups, community centres, domestic abuse refuges, homeless shelters, schools, refugee centres, mental health centres, family centres and youth clubs.
For some people living well below the poverty line, it can be a choice of turning the heat on in their home or eating. When 1 in 4 people struggle to access nutritious food and 1 in 3 parents miss meals to feed their families, City Harvest’s support can be a lifeline - literally.
The Wicken Estate donated 2.1 tonnes of potatoes to the charity. City Harvest converted those potatoes into 5,043 meals delivered across the boroughs of London.
"After a very good growing season, with lots of warm sunny days, and the use of the Estate's irrigation system, we grew a high-yeilding potato crop. This means this season, we have some potatoes that are surplus to contract tonnage.
I felt that our excellent harvest could benefit other people who are living with very little, potentially homeless or families needing a helping hand. We are delighted to support City Harvest and its work feeding some of the most vulnerable people in our society today," reported Toby Hogsbjerg, Farm Manager
